Marketing agency vs in-house vs freelancer: an honest comparison

Three ways to get your marketing done, what each really costs, and how to pick.

At some point doing your own marketing stops working. You are too busy, or the results have flattened. You then have three options: hire someone, hire a freelancer, or hire an agency. We are an agency, so weigh our view accordingly, but here is how we would lay it out for a friend.

In-house hire Freelancer Agency
Skills One person, a few strengths One specialty, done well A team covering ads, creative, web and search
Cost Salary, benefits, tools, training Lower, by the hour or project Monthly fee
Speed to start Slow: recruit and onboard Fast Fast
Knows your business Deeply, over time Somewhat Well, if they specialize in businesses like yours
Risk Everything depends on one person Availability, and gaps outside their specialty Being one client among many
Best when Marketing is a daily, full-time need You need one thing done You need several channels working together

In-house

A good in-house marketer lives your brand and is there every day. The limit is range. Running ads, designing creative, building landing pages, managing SEO and setting up follow-up are different jobs. One person is rarely strong at all of them, and if they leave, the knowledge leaves too.

Freelancer

Freelancers are a strong choice for a defined task: build this site, run this one ad account. Problems appear in the gaps. The ads person blames the website, the website person blames the ads, and you become the project manager.

Agency

An agency gives you a team for less than the cost of hiring one. The risks are real too: some agencies report on clicks instead of customers, or hand your account to whoever is newest. Ask these before you sign:

  • What will you report on, and how often?
  • Who will work on my account day to day?
  • Who makes the creative and builds the landing pages?
  • What happens to leads after they come in?
  • Do you work with businesses like mine?

The bottom line

Choose in-house when marketing is a full-time job at your company. Choose a freelancer for a single, clear task. Choose an agency when you need ads, a website and follow-up to work as one system. That last case is what we do.
