Instagram ads for local businesses: how to turn views into bookings

The five parts every local Instagram campaign needs, and where most of them break.

Instagram is where local customers discover businesses they did not know they were looking for. An ad that works there has less to do with a clever caption and more to do with five parts lining up. Miss one and the rest cannot make up for it.

1. An offer

“Come visit us” is not an offer. A first-visit special, a free assessment or an intro package is. A good offer is easy to understand in three seconds, feels low-risk and leads naturally to your regular services.

2. Creative that looks like it belongs

People scroll past anything that looks like an ad. What stops them is real: your space, your team, a real result, shot on a phone. Vertical video for reels and stories usually earns the most attention. Say the offer in the first seconds, and put it in text on screen, because many people watch with the sound off.

3. Targeting that stays local

Set a radius around your location that matches how far customers actually travel. Inside that area, modern campaigns often perform best with broad targeting, letting the system find the right people from your creative and your conversion data, rather than stacking narrow interests.

4. A place to land

Sending ad traffic to your home page wastes most of it. Send it to a single page that repeats the offer, shows proof, answers the obvious questions and lets the visitor book or leave their details in under a minute.

5. Follow-up

A lead who hears from you in five minutes is far more likely to book than one who hears tomorrow. Automated text and email replies, plus appointment reminders, are what turn a lead list into a full calendar.

What to measure

  • Cost per lead: what you pay for each enquiry.
  • Booking rate: how many leads make an appointment.
  • Show rate: how many turn up.
  • Cost per new customer: the number that decides whether the campaign is worth running.

Likes, comments and reach are useful signals about the creative. They are not the goal.

Common mistakes

  • Boosting posts and calling it a campaign. See ads vs boosted posts.
  • Running the same ad for months until everyone nearby has seen it too often.
  • No tracking, so nobody knows which ad produced which booking.
  • Leads sitting in an inbox until someone has time.
